STORY #1: Congressional Trades in the Oil Sector Amid Shifting Global Supply Dynamics

A recent study by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) indicates that global oil demand might outpace supply next year, overturning a previous forecast of a surplus. This change follows OPEC+ extending significant oil output cuts into next year, initially implemented in late 2022 to bolster oil markets against weakening demand growth, high interest rates, and record U.S. output.

The EIA predicts a decline in global oil inventories by 700,000 bpd in the second half of 2024, following a 500,000 bpd reduction in the first half. Consequently, refiners may need to draw from inventories to meet demand.

Oil stocks have performed well in 2024, with Exxon Mobil Corp (XOM) rising 10.64% YTD. Representative Ro Khanna reported purchasing XOM shares worth up to $150,000. ConocoPhillips (COP) announced acquiring Marathon Oil in a $22.5 billion all-stock deal, including $5.4 billion in debt. Representative Jonathan Jackson invested up to $50,000 in COP, while others sold COP shares from late 2023 to early 2024. ConocoPhillips recently sued the Department of the Interior over new regulations they claim obstruct petroleum production in Alaska.

Other significant U.S. market players include Chevron Corp (CVX), Shell PLC (SHEL), and TotalEnergies SE (TTE). Despite rising electric vehicle use, petroleum remains the dominant energy source in the U.S., primarily for transport. The sector faces volatility amid bullish performance, acquisitions, and legal challenges.

Serving since 2023, Collins has disclosed multiple transactions involving digital assets like Aerodrome Finance (AERO), The Graph (GRT), and Velodrome (VELO).

Notable transactions include:

  • June 22, 2024: Purchased $1,000 to $15,000 worth of AERO tokens at $0.778 per token.

  • June 23, 2024: Sold similar value of AERO tokens at $0.747 per token.

  • July 6, 2024: Acquired $15,000 to $50,000 worth of AERO tokens at $0.637 per token, preceding a 50% price surge.

Collins also traded:

  • June 24, 2024: Sold $1,000 to $15,000 worth of The Graph at $0.217 per token.

  • July 6, 2024: Purchased similar value of GRT at $0.188 per token.

  • June 24, 2024: Sold $1,000 to $15,000 worth of Velodrome at $0.097 per token.

Regulatory Context: On May 22, 2024, the U.S. House of Representatives approved the Financial Innovation and Technology for the 21st Century Act (FIT21), establishing a regulatory framework for digital asset markets and positioning the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) as the primary regulator. The bill received strong bipartisan support, marking a significant milestone for the crypto industry, though its future in the Senate remains uncertain.
