🏦 2/ US Politicians potential insider trading: Kentucky Representative Jumps on the NVDA Bandwagon

One of the fastest-growing companies in the S&P 500, Nvidia Corp (NVDA) has been making headlines this year. Currently, at a market cap of almost $3.32 billion, Nvidia has been transforming the tech industry with its incorporation of AI in its chips.

NVDA stock is up by 180.07% year-to-date. On June 7, the company announced its sixth stock split, pushing its price back to $134.91. Even at its current stage, some analysts speculate that NVDA is still undervalued when looked at from the lens of a forward price-to-earnings model.

Rep. Morgan McGarvey, the most recent Congressional candidate to jump on the NVDA stock bandwagon, purchased between $1,001 and $15,000 worth of shares. The only Democrat in the US House representing the state of Kentucky at present, he has been incumbent in his current role since January 2023. His purchase of NVDA was under joint ownership; other stocks that he reported purchasing alongside Nvidia were Delta Air Lines (DAL) and Interactive Brokers Group Inc (IBKR).

At present, Rep. McGarvey serves on the House Veterans Affairs Committee and the House Small Business Committee.

STORY #1:  Insights into Congressional Trading Expertise of Pelosi's & Their Portfolio

In the world of congressional trading, trends can sometimes make headlines, while other times, it’s just a matter of good fortune. However, some individuals don't attribute their success to mere luck.

This week's spotlight shines on two such individuals whose financial expertise is exceptional. Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi and her husband, Paul Pelosi, are frequently in the spotlight for their trading activities, as their impeccable timing and significant gains never fail to impress.

Last week, financial data provider Quiver Quantitative reported on his X profile that former Speaker Pelosi's portfolio had reached an all-time high. Her holdings have increased by more than $23 million year-to-date, an impressive 130 times her annual salary, all within just six months. This is undoubtedly a remarkable achievement.

But there's more. Pelosi recently disclosed her latest trades from June, where she bought stock options in Broadcom Inc. (AVGO) and Nvidia Corporation (NVDA), each valued at up to $5 million. Both trades have been profitable since she made them. The AVGO stock, purchased on June 24, has risen over 9.50%, while the NVDA shares, bought on June 26, have increased by more than 6.70%.

The latest trades once again show that some people have a true knack for the trading of financial securities and the Pelosis hold a strong position amongst them.

STORY #2: Congress Continues To Make Hefty Investments in U.S. T Bills

U.S. Treasury bills (T-bills) have seen nearly 420 trades by Congress members over the past three years, making them the second-most traded asset. T-bills are short-term debt instruments issued by the U.S. Department of the Treasury and are considered extremely safe investments, backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government. They are sold for less than their face value and upon maturity, investors receive the full face value. However, selling before maturity in a rising interest rate environment can result in a loss.

Treasury securities consist of three types: bonds, notes, and bills, each defined by their maturity dates. Treasury bonds have the longest maturities (20-30 years), Treasury notes range from two to ten years, and T-bills have the shortest (four to 52 weeks).

Since 2020, trading in T-bills has increased among Congress members. In 2023, there were 255 trades, with 158 trades reported so far in 2024. Notable recent traders include Senator Tom Carper, Rep. Rudy Yakym, and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.

On July 3, 2024, the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield dropped to 4.352% due to weak economic data, while the 2-year yield fell to 4.698%. This decline followed reports of a labor market slowdown and lower-than-anticipated private payroll growth. U.S. Treasury bills remain a cornerstone of conservative investment strategies, even attracting interest from Congress members amid high interest rates.
